01 / The approach

We cultivate
the seed already
within you.

Your gifts begin as possibilities. With attention, relationship, and practice, those possibilities can take shape in how you live, create, and care for others.

Mesa de Saq B'e brings Santos Romero’s Andean and Maya training into conversation with modern human development. Together, we explore your life project: the meaningful direction your gifts can grow toward, and the everyday actions that help you live it.

A moment of insight becomes part of your life when you give it somewhere to grow.

02 / Walking with sacred time

The Cholq’ij.
A count of days.
A path of becoming.

Chol — to count or put in order.
Q’ij — day or sun.

The Cholq’ij is the sacred 260-day calendar of the Maya, carried forward by living communities and their daykeepers, the Ajq’ijab’. Its name is often translated as “the count of days.” At Mesa de Saq B'e, we approach this sacred count as a guide for human development: learning to recognize our gifts, cultivate our life project, and participate consciously in our becoming.

Each day brings together a Nahual and a number from 1 to 13. Nahuales are sacred powers present in nature and within us. The day’s number helps us explore how that power moves and works in our development.

A trecena is a cycle of 13 days. Twenty trecenas complete the 260-day count, offering a rhythm for returning to our lives with greater awareness, practice, and maturity.

The 260-day cycle is traditionally associated with the time a human being develops in the womb. This correspondence offers an image of gestation: potential taking form through time. Here, we carry that image into the continuing development of our gifts and life project.

The 20 day signs and the 13-number count meet in the 260-day sacred cycle.

The purpose / Human development

Your gifts are seeds.
Your life is where
they take root.

The Cholq’ij offers a path for developing human potential. We arrive with possibilities that need to be recognized, cultivated, and brought into expression. Our growth can become a contribution to the growth of our community.

To walk with this count is to participate: observe the Nahuales in nature, listen for their presence within you, and give what you discover a place in daily life. Like a seed that needs soil and tending, a gift matures through practice. An insight can become a conversation, a creative act, a gesture of care, or a step toward your life project.

The Andean connection

The Chakana.
A bridge between worlds.

In the Andes, the Chakana—the stepped cross—evokes a bridge or stairway: a way of understanding relationship, balance, and the meeting of different realms of life. Some interpretations connect its form with agricultural calendars, the turning of the seasons, and ceremonial cycles.

Some contemporary spiritual interpretations also find the numbers 13 and 20 in the Chakana’s geometry: 13 inner units and 20 vertices along its outline. We approach these as symbolic resonances between distinct traditions, each with its own history and teachings.

At Mesa de Saq B'e, the Chakana offers a companion image for human development. It invites us to cultivate balance, reciprocity, and a conscious relationship with the Earth and the cosmos. A bridge is something we cross through practice, carrying what we learn into how we live.

An inheritance carried with courage

Living wisdom.
Generations of care.

The Cholq’ij reaches us through the commitment of living Maya peoples. Families, elders, and Ajq’ijab’ have carried the count and its teachings across generations, through colonial religious persecution and profound loss.

During Spanish campaigns against Indigenous religions, people were punished and sacred books were destroyed. The continued practice of the sacred count bears witness to courage, sacrifice, and care.

We approach this inheritance with gratitude toward the communities who protected it and with responsibility toward the teachers who continue sharing it. To walk with the Cholq’ij is also to remember the people whose devotion made that encounter possible.

About the Chakana connection and preservation

The Chakana’s bridge symbolism and agricultural-calendar interpretations are discussed by the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino. The 13-and-20 comparison appears in contemporary spiritual writing, including Octavio F. Dávila Solari’s La Chakana Oracular. Its use for human development here expresses Mesa de Saq B'e’s approach.

For the history of religious persecution and Maya book burning, see the Library of Congress. The continued sacred count and the experiences of Maya daykeepers are documented in Science’s reporting with contemporary Maya communities.
